Assistant professorship of Dr. Georg Rauter

Dr. Georg Rauter was nominated Assistant Professor for Medical Robotics and Mechatronics at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel, Switzerland.

external pageThe Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel has recently been awarded a Flagship project from the Werner Siemens Foundation (Zug/Switzerland). The principal aim of this interdisciplinary project called external pageMinimally Invasive Robot Assisted Computer-guided LaserosteotomE (MIRACLE) is the development of a minimally invasive robotic endoscope for cutting bone with laser light.

First results from cutting bone with laser light in open surgery have shown better healing than conventional mechanical cutting techniques. The reason for an increased healing rate in bone cutting with laser light is that the bone structure stays intact. Moreover, cutting bone with laser opens new possibilities for surgical procedures in the future, will lead to surgical procedures with high precision and accuracy, while the surgical results are expected to improve further for the benefit of the patient. In our MIRACLE project, we want to go even a step further: we will develop bone cutting technologies with laser enabling minimally invasive surgical procedures.
