Landscape Art meets Robotics Research

Prof. Robert Riener contributed to the new Swiss Globi comic series book about “Globi and the Robots”, which was released this week. It is already on the Swiss bestseller list.

The title of his paper and talk was “Human-​in-the-loop optimization of a multi-​joint wearable robot for movement assistance”

ETH Zurich’s Rehabilitation Initiative is now taking shape with a newly founded competence center for Rehabilitation Engineering and Science (RESC). The center will establish an interdisciplinary network with all the necessary expertise to develop a holistic approach for the comprehensive management of movement impairments.

Prof. Riener, Prof. Gassert, and further ETH researchers are planning to partner with clinics, foundations, public authorities and other institutions through a broad-based initiative aimed at improving the quality of life and participation of people with physical disabilities. The initiative focuses on a centre that will be a nexus of ETH expertise with up to eight new professorships and a new Master’s programme.

DIH-HERO, the Digital Innovation Hub Healthcare Robotics is an open network, funded by the European Commission, has opened its doors for the first brokerage event on October 30 and 31.

During their annual meeting our group presented our ARMin robot to the German speaking health ministers (D - A - L - FL - CH).

Cantonal Councillor Thomas Heiniger and his colleagues joined our lab to see recent developments and discuss future directions of assistive technologies.

On Wednesday, five Swiss start-ups received the W.A. de Vigier Award, which comes with prize money of 100,000 Swiss francs each. Two ETH spin-offs were among them. MyoSwiss helps improve the lives of people with limited mobility, while nanoleq is bringing a cable with unrivalled longevity to market.

The talk given by Fabian Just at the AUTOMED 2018 was entitled “Pilot Study: Effects of Arm Weight Compensation with the Rehabilitation Robot ARMin”. AUTOMED is a technical committee supported by the German Society for Biomedical Engineering (DGBMT) and the VDI / VDE-Society Measurement and Automation (GMA).

Dr. Urs Keller and Dr. Schrafl-Altermatt received ETH Medals for their outstanding Dissertations.

On September 8, thirty-one members of the Swiss National Council and the Council of States visited the ETH and took a guided tour through our lab. With the projects “Somnomat” and “lower limb exoskeletons” and our work on muscle fatigue we could give insights into current research activities.

Jon Snoddy and Moritz Bächer from Disney Research Zurich, visited the SMS Lab at Balgrist Campus.

Two papers from the SMS lab won Awards at the IEEE/RAS-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics 2016 (Singapore)

Dr. Georg Rauter was nominated Assistant Professor for Medical Robotics and Mechatronics at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel, Switzerland.

The Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF awarded funding for the professorship of Dr. Laura Marchal-Crespo at the ARTORG Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research of the University of Bern and at the Division for Cognitive and Restorative Neurology of the University Hospital for Neurology, Inselspital.

Our partnership within smart technology for artificial muscle applications in space (STAMAS) project was successfully accomplished. Reviewers assessed the general quality of the work excellent and praised outstanding results for this very innovative and challenging project in space robotics.

The new Cybathlon trailer, which was filmed at this summer's rehearsal games, is now out.

On June 7th more than 1 million households in Japan have seen the 30 minutes show
